61-year-old CEO shares his tips for staying fit at any age

Training tips from the fittest guy on earth

Having won the 2019 and 2019 CrossFit Games, earning him the coveted title ‘the fittest guy on earth’, it’s fair to say we could learn a thing or two from Mat Fraser.

This guy knows how to push himself.

We caught up with the American athlete while he was in London launching Nike’s newest training shoe, the Metcon4. He told us why what you do outside of the gym is just as important as your workout and how joining a CrossFit box could be the best training decision you make this year.

Men's Health: Besides giving your all in the gym, what would you say is the most important part of your routine, which some of us might undervalue?

Mat Fraser:Before I found success in the Games, I trained as hard as I could all the time but I wasn’t putting in the same effort outside of the gym. I thought all the value was just in the training itself, but really it’s the small percentages that add up. For example, ensuring your diet is on point, that you’re getting enough sleep and properly warming up and cooling down before and after your workout – that's what makes all the difference. Being consistent with this is when you’ll see great results. I never realised how important sleep was, but now I prioritise getting my 9-10hrs sleep every night.

MH: Why is CrossFit such a good way to stay healthy?
MF:Friends will say to me, I love watching what you do but I could never do it myself. What I do, how I train, how I compete in the Games and what CrossFit is are two completely different things. CrossFit is all about promoting the everyday person. You’re in and out of the gym in one hour. I know so many people who have started working out on their own and they end up staying in their comfort zone and that gets tedious very fast. Sign up to a CrossFit box, they’ll warm you up and set your workout which is different everyday so you never get bored.

MH: What’s the biggest mistake you see being made in the gym?

MF:I see so many people not learning the proper technique with barbell work. A lot of people don’t take the time learning the fundamentals. One week of practising the movements and then deciding to pile the weight on the bar is not smart. Take one step back to take two steps forward further down the road. Invest in yourself and you’ll prevent injury and see bigger progressions going forward in training.
MH: What’s the best piece of workout advice you’ve ever been given?

MF:Take note of the small percentages. Every person I’m competing against is training the same, with the same intensity, completing the same exercises. That’s why I need to grab the benefits from other areas of my life. That’s diet, sleep and even relationships. If you’re arguing with your spouse, that’s draining energy which you could be better spent using in your training session. That’s why surrounding yourself with people who better, not hinder your performance is so important.

MH: When you reach that point in a workout where every fibre in your body is telling you to quit, how do you push through the pain barrier?

MF:I always tell myself if I slow down now, I’ll feel good for a minute but I’ll be frustrated with myself that I didn’t give it my all for the rest of the day and even the rest of the week. However, if I push through the pain, the fact is that discomfort will be gone in a minute anyway. It’s all about feeling good about the effort you’ve put in.

MH: What advice would you give to someone struggling for motivation?

MF:Ease back into training after some time off, don’t just force yourself to the gym for the sake of it. After the Games I always take a couple of weeks off; the first couple of weeks back after that is always tough. Don’t expect to hit your personal bests right away. For the first few days, just get yourself to the gym, maybe go with a friend, and just do light intensity work with exercises that you really enjoy. After that you can slowly add in other things. If you jump straight in with both feet, you’re going to be hurting.

MH: What are your thoughts on Nike’s Metcon4?

MF:I love it. It’s by far my favourite training shoe ever because it fits so well. I like the fact that Nike doesn’t come out with a completely new shoe every year. Instead they make modifications to the old one, making it better and better. Every year they’ll just refine it after listening to the athletes.
MH: Lastly, what are your goals for 2019?

MF:Honestly, just to keep working my ass off and to make sure I keep having fun with my training. I think people often forget that. If it’s not fun, you won’t stick with it, so find something you love doing this year in training.
