The secrets of growing a tulip tree

Houseplants create a special atmosphere. And if they are unusual and exotic, they delight the eye and surprise. For example, a tulip tree will definitely appeal to lovers of perfection and flower lovers.

What is this plant?

The tulip tree is a stunningly beautiful exotic tree, whose birthplace is considered to be Africa. It belongs to the Begonian family and in the wild reaches 25 meters in height.

But in room conditions, it usually does not grow above two meters. By the way, there are other names: spatodea bell-shaped, "tree-fountain", "fiery tree", "African tulip tree". Such names the plant has received for the bright flowers, which in color and shape really resemble tulips.

Tulip tree is considered evergreen and fast-growing. Surprisingly, it can bloom almost all year round, especially in natural conditions and subject to all cultivation rules.

But even when there are no flowers on the branches, the spathoday does not lose its beauty, because all of it is strewn with large and bright leaves, which grow in pairs (up to 15 pieces in one petiole) and have a dull rough surface. The trunk of a tulip tree is brown-gray and covered with gray rough spots.

Flowers are bright red, shaped like cups about 10-12 centimeters deep. They are always directed upwards, and after the rain they are filled with water (therefore birds often live on trees).

After flowering on the ground buds are formed brown pods, having a length of about 10-20 centimeters. Inside them, seeds are formed, from which new shoots then appear.

Where to buy?

Where to get a tulip tree? Of course, today in the flower shops you can find almost anything. But when you buy in one of them there is a risk to stumble upon substandard or expired seeds, which, of course, will not germinate.

Yes, you can buy an already growing tree, but in store conditions, plants often spray it and “stuff it” with all sorts of chemicals. And once in your home, the spatodea can simply die. So it's best to turn to experienced flower growers and buy seeds or shoots from them.

How to grow?

How to grow a tulip tree? Despite the fact that in nature it grows in tropical forests and calmly endures any droughts, this plant just needs to provide the right care, without it it will die.

It is important to choose the right place, to ensure sufficient lighting and optimum humidity. But everything should be written in more detail.

Lighting

Surprisingly, a tulip tree growing in sunny Africa does not tolerate sunlight and responds to such an impact with yellowing or falling leaves. The ideal option is a penumbra. Also suppose diffused light.

A place

Tulip tree does not like drafts, so it is not recommended to place it at the entrances or air conditioners. Location near heating devices is also unacceptable. Putting a pot by the window is definitely not worth it.

In addition, it is desirable to choose the north or west side of the apartment or house. It is not recommended to move the spatodea to the balcony, but it can be put in the garden by choosing a shady area.

Temperature

Creating optimal conditions for growing tulip tree, pay special attention to temperature. So, in the summer, it should be about 20-26 degrees, and in winter the temperature can drop to 10-12 degrees.

Sudden drops are disastrous, as is a significant decrease. So, at 3-5 degrees all processes begin to slow down, at 0 the aboveground part of the spathodea dies, and at -5 the roots also die. But if they are damaged slightly, then after freezing can recover.

Humidity

Proper care involves maintaining optimal humidity, which should be about 65%. With a significant decrease in the plant can begin to dry out and lose leaves. If the humidity is insufficient, then next to the pot you can place a container filled with water. Also in this case will require regular spraying of the leaves.

Right soil

A beautiful tulip tree can grow in almost any soil, including fresh. But the more nutritious the soil is, the higher the growth rate will be. In addition, enriched soil stimulates flowering, as well as an increase in the number and size of leaves.

How to water?

Watering should be done regularly, since drying the earthy coma will inevitably lead to drying and falling leaves, and then to the death of the plant. But the moisture should not stagnate, it can provoke root rot.The humidity should be constantly monitored so that the African tulip tree will delight with its flowers and leaves.

Additional fertilizing

A spathode needs to be fed during a period of active growth, that is, in spring and summer. You can use mineral fertilizers in combination with organic. You can feed a tulip tree every one or two weeks.

Breeding

Reproduction spathode at home can be carried out in several ways. The first is cuttings. But young shoots without bark should be used. The second way is propagation with the help of root cane. The roots of a tulip tree have unique properties and are able to recover even after freezing, so by planting a part of them, you can see a sprout after a certain time.

The most proven and effective method of reproduction - growing from seed.

At first it is recommended to place them in water-soaked cotton wool for a couple of days. Humidity needs to be monitored and maintained. Then you can move the seeds to the ground, without forgetting to ensure good drainage.

The soil must be loose and moderately moistened.Next, the container should be covered with a film or glass and placed in a warm place (in winter, you can provide additional moderate heat, this will accelerate germination). In about a few weeks, sprouts will appear. Now capacity can be put on the chosen place. Replanting spatodes in the coming year is not desirable.
