My Baby's Bullet-Proof Vest: A Sleepless New Year's Eve
About twenty years ago, I gave up going out for New Year's Eve. It might just be a coincidence, but I was getting ready to have my first baby. I've never looked back on that time with regrets—New Year's Eve is, at its very basest, amateur night. It's the one night when people who don't really drink go out and drink a lot, make fools of themselves, and cause all kinds of trouble. Almost every New Year's, we all stay home and gorge on junk food while watching movies and poking each other to stay awake. This year was different, though. We all stayed home except for the aforementioned baby, who is now a grown-up nineteen-year-old. He went out for the night wearing a bullet proof vest.
My son has wanted to be a police officer for as long as I can remember. He graduated from high school and started college with one goal in mind: to earn a degree in Criminal Justice and enter the law enforcement field. He joined a group called the Explorers, and as part of that program, he has a full uniform and is allowed to ride-along with experienced police officers. He gets to see, first hand, what being a police officer entails. He learns about the pressure officers face, sees different situations, and discovers how those situations should be handled. It's a wonderful experience and I am delighted that he's doing something that he loves.
I will not lie, though. When my son told me that he had scheduled a ride-along for New Year's Eve, my heart quaked, just a bit. After all, it's New Year's Eve. The worst night of the night for drunks, fights, and car crashes. When my son left, he gave me a hug, and at that moment, I realized that the tiny baby I remembered is long gone. His midsection was fully encased in body armor, and I realized that although I was staying home for New Year's Eve, so as to avoid the drunks and the fights and the unsafe roads, there was no way that I'd be sleeping that night.
Carmen Staicer is a whirlwind of movement. When she's not ferrying her six children to their various sports/drama/forensics/track meets, she's usually to be found exercising. She's an avid fan of 5K and 8K races and she recently earned her Black Belt in Muay Thai boxing. She never sleeps enough, reads avidly, lives on Vietnamese coffee and is a fan of cupcakes, vodka and nachos. If you can't find her, she's probably been buried under the vast mountain of laundry that never seems to dissipate.
