How to insulate the walls

The most effective external insulation of walls, but we can not neglect the internal. The choice of insulation - an important task, from the correct decision which depends on the comfort of living in the house.

What kind of insulation is better?

The most popular thermal insulation materials are mineral wool (stone, basalt, glass wool, ecowool) and foam plastic. All of them have decent features. But mineral wool has one drawback - high hygroscopicity. This means that this material is able to absorb moisture from the air. Therefore, the walls, insulated with such a heat insulator, require high-quality protection: the installation of both waterproofing materials and vapor-permeable membranes is required.
When using foam such problems do not arise. Assertions about its flammability and its ability to emit harmful substances are fiction. This material can withstand temperatures up to 110 ° C and is safe for human health, which is confirmed by the conclusion of the Institute of Hygiene. F.F. Erisman number 03 / PM8.

Stages of wall insulation

Both internal and external insulation starts with the installation of wooden or metal sheathing. But if mineral wool is used, a waterproofing material is first laid on the outside of the house. After that, proceed to the installation of crates. For its devices will need either metal profiles or wooden bars. The distance between the vertical slats should be 2-3 cm less than the width of the roll or slab of mineral wool. This will ensure the tight fit of the insulator. If foam is used, the pitch of the racks should be equal to the width of the sheet.
The thickness of the heat-insulation layer depends on many factors: the climatic conditions of the region, the material from which the walls are built, the method of heating the house. On average, 5-10 cm of insulation is enough for southern latitudes; 15-25 cm is required for northern areas. In order to fulfill these conditions, you do not need to search for material of the required thickness; This method is beneficial not only because of its ease of installation, but also due to the fact that an air gap forms between the slabs of mineral wool or foam, which is an excellent heat accumulator.
This method of wall insulation is most effective: each subsequent layer of insulation material must overlap the joints in the previous one. This minimizes the possibility of "cold bridges". Upon completion of this work, a vapor barrier (for mineral wool) and a windproof membrane are attached over the insulation.
