1. When you head out the door for work each day, your to-do list is so long, even Mrs. Incredible couldn't accomplish it.True or false?

2. You rarely ask for favors from your neighbors and friends. You wouldn't want them to think you couldn't handle your own life.True or false?

3. You often think, "I can't believe I'm missing her soccer game."True or false?

4. Your job is just no fun, and you'd rather be almost anywhere else than there.True or false?

If you answered True to three or four of these questions, your work-life balance is out of whack. How balanced you feel may be determined by the way you approach your job, says Randall S. Hansen, PhD, owner of Quintessential Careers in Los Angeles, an online job counseling service. Read on to see if you're sabotaging yourself:

You Set Barriers, Not Boundaries
If your days are so busy that you rarely sit down, eat lunch or even breathe, you need to set aside time for yourself that's free of work demands. Sue Emanuel, 45, an executive with UBS, an international banking organization, works long hours—often leaving her house at 5 a.m. and getting home after 7 p.m.—but says she does not let work interfere with time with her husband and two teenaged children. "I could think, 'This is exhausting,'" Sue says. "But instead I choose to think, 'How cool is this? I get to do it all.'"

You Try to Do Everything
Each day, Barbara Adachi, chief talent officer for Deloitte Human Capital Consulting, lists three things she must get done. "I could work 24 hours a day," she says. "But in order to feel balanced, it's really important to manage yourself and your priorities." Additionally, she says, set priorities for your family—you don't need to be at every soccer game. Maybe it's better to vow that you'll make it to four every season and then figure out how to reach that goal.

You Try to Do It All Yourself
Both at work and at home, ask for help, Dr. Hansen says. That may mean asking a neighbor to drive your kids to school (you can reciprocate on weekends) or asking a coworker to cover a shift for you (you'll do it for her next week.)

You Live Amidst Clutter
If your workspace is a mess, it may mean you're wasting time looking for things when you could be on your way home instead. "The more organized you are, the less likely you are to feel frazzled and out of control at work and at home," Dr. Hansen says.

You Hate Your Job
We've all faced the "it's a paycheck" quandary. But if that's the only reason you're staying at your job, you're bound to feel unbalanced. If you dread Monday mornings, "no wonder you feel stressed," says Dr. Hansen.
