Church holiday January 14

Vasiliev is called this day in memory of the Blessed Vasily the Great, the Archbishop of Caesarea Cappado-Kyisko. He was born in Caesarea in 330, and came from a well-known clan, zealously devoted to the Christian faith. Vasili received an excellent education in Caesarea, Constantinople and Athens, where he made friends with Gregory the Theologian. Returning about 357 to Caesarea, Basil soon embarked on the path of ascetic life. First he was a reader in the church, then, deciding to imitate the great Christian ascetics, he gave his property to the poor and, gathering monks in a hostel, formed deserts, where he attracted Gregory the Theologian. Saints Basil and Gregory struggled in strict abstinence: in their dwelling, without a roof, there was no hearth, food was the scantiest. They themselves hewn stones, planted and watered trees, carried heavy loads. From the great labors corn did not leave their hands. In solitude, they intensively engaged in the study of the Holy Scriptures, and Basil the Great wrote a collection of the rules of moral life.

During the struggle with the Arian heresy, the Church called for the service of both saints; returning to Caesarea, Basil was ordained a deacon, and then ordained as a priest. Following the demise of the Bishop of Caesarea, Basil was raised to his pulpit. At a dangerous time, a split and struggle against heresies, the saint supported the Orthodox, asserted their faith, calling for courage and patience. The emperor Valens, a supporter of the Arians, sent the prefect Modest to Vasily, who began to threaten him with ruin, exile, torture and even death. “Death is a blessing for me,” answered Vasily. “It would rather lead me to God, for whom I live and work.” After reporting Valens about the saint’s inflexibility, Modest said: "We, the king, are defeated by the rector of the church." Shocked king refused to support the Arians. In Caesarea, Basil made two monasteries, male and female. He used all the personal means and income of his church for the benefit of the poor; in each district of his metropolis created almshouses; in Caesaria, a hotel and hospitality house. The saint reposed in 379.
