When you're overweight, you might assume that shedding those extra pounds would make just about everything better, from your aches and pains to mental stress and self-esteem. While many people who've lost a significant amount of weight do report that slimming down has transformed their lives, others are surprised to find that many things remain constant—regardless of the number on the scale. We asked 12 women who have lost more than 50 pounds to reveal what stayed the same as their waistlines shrank. (Looking to take back control of your health? .)

The desire to be perfect

"I can't wear a bikini yet because it just doesn't look perfect and I don't feel right about showing the imperfections. Losing so much weight stretched my skin and I have lots of stretch marks, though thankfully they're white and not that easy to see. I'm sure I still have a lot of mental and emotional issues to deal with, and it isn't easy. The process takes time. It's a constant battle to not be so disappointed or hard on yourself."

My support system

"What didn't change for me after my weight loss: the way that friends and family treated me and supported me. This truly showed that they loved me before and after, which is a powerful and life-affirming thing! I am much more than a body to them, which is wonderful."

My trouble spots

"Even at my lowest weight, all I could focus on were the areas that still weren't 'right,' most of which have to do with my body type: thick thighs, large butt, and a tendency for any extra weight to immediately go to my gut and stay there. I never really felt a sense of accomplishment over losing weight, either. It didn't magically fix my self-esteem, or magically make me okay with my body. It was discouraging and disheartening to realize that I had so much more work to do on myself emotionally."

The sense that I'm too heavy for certain activities
"It took about a year for my mind to catch up with the changes in the body and for me not think of myself as an obese person. I went to Santa Barbara with a couple of friends. We rented a quadricycle, and they asked me to sit in the back while they pedaled in front. I told them that the bike would flip over because it would be too heavy in the back. They looked at me as if I had lost my mind. Then I realized that I had lost 100 pounds and it sounded ridiculous."

The amount of effort I have to put in

"What hasn't changed is the hard work required to maintain my goals and give me the best body and health possible. I haven't stopped going to the gym. I go 5 to 6 days a week and try to eat sensibly, typically high-protein/low carb, and I train with my trainer often."

My relationship with my husband

"It was nice that my husband never even noticed the weight gain or loss unless I mentioned it. He said he loved me just the way I was, no matter what. Although I did not need his approval, it was nice to see that my weight did not matter to him. His unwavering support and love of me and my body never changed."

My reasons for staying motivated

"I've noticed that the one constant before, during and after my weight loss is the need to do this myself, not another person.
